Talent Wins Big in the 65th National Awards: Sri Devi and Vinod Khanna honored Posthumously


Established in 1954, National Film Awards is one of the most prestigious Award Ceremonies in India. A National panel appointed by the Government selects the best films and Actors. The awards for these films are presented by the President of India. Highly Talented Actors, Actresses, Musicians, Singers Editors, Designers, Writers, etc., are honored in the National Film Awards. Excellent films that are popular on a National Scale and Regional scale are honored in this.

The ceremony takes place in New Delhi every year. The National Film Awards are the highest honor for films in India and are considered to be Indian equivalent of the American Academy Awards as they are selected on a National Scale.

The winner’s list of the awards was announced on 13th April 2018, and the ceremony will take place on 3rd May. Awards are presented for Feature Films, Non- Feature Films, and Writing on Cinema.

National Film Awards consists of two sub-categories like Golden Lotus (Swarna Kamal) and Silver Lotus (Rajat Kamal) that comprises of the categories related to films and actors respectively. In addition to this, a lifetime achievement award named the Dada Saheb Phalke Award is also presented to legends who contributed to the Indian Cinema. This year’s Dada Saheb Phalke Award is presented to Vinod Khanna posthumously.


Many popular films from Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam etc., industries have been awarded the Golden Lotus Awards. The mention worthy ones among these are: Village Rockstars an Assamese film won the award for Best Feature Film, Bahubali 2: The Conclusion, a Telugu film won an award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, a film named Mhorkya (Marathi) won the award for Best Children’s film, and A Malayalam Film Bhayanakam won the award for Best Direction.

In the Silver Lotus Category, movies like Irada (Hindi), Aalorukkam (Malayalam) and Dhappa (Marathi) have won the awards in Best Film on Environment/ Conservation/ Preservation, Best Film on Other Social Issues and Best Feature Film on National Integration respectively.


Reputed Actors Sridevi (Best Actress for Hindi Film- Mom), Riddhi Sen (Best Actor for Bengali Film- Nagarkirtan), Divya Dutta (Best Supporting Actress for Hindi Film- Irada) and Fahadh Faasil (Best Supporting Actor for Malayalam Film- Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum) were awarded in the Silver Lotus Category.

AR Rahman won two awards for best music direction- Songs and Best Music Direction- Background score for the films Kaatru Veliyidai and Mom respectively. The Movie Bahubali: The Conclusion that has won the award for the Best popular film for providing Wholesome entertainment had also grabbed an award for the Best Special Effects.

Notable movies like Newton (Hindi), To Let (Tamil), The Ghazi Attack (Telugu), Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (Malayalam) have bagged the best feature film awards in the Regional Awards Category.
